Scouting Ireland is passionate about ensuring opportunity exists for all young people to access water-activities regardless of their ability, background and experiences.
On the water, we can create a sense of freedom, adventure and teamwork for all our members. Supporting our member groups to access training and equipment to enable true inclusion afloat is an ongoing priority.
When considering how inclusive your activities are, Sea Scout Groups might ask themselves:
- Are there barriers to participation in our Group?
- How accessible are our facilities?
- Do we understand the needs of young people in our community?
- Do we make reasonable adjustments to accommodate young people’s needs?
- Does the membership of our Group reflect the membership of our community?
- Do any of our traditions or practices exclude some young people?
- Is our Group a place where people feel comfortable to be who they are?
- Do we believe in helping young people to achieve their potential?
- When we are planning an event, do we consider from the outset whether it’s inclusive?
- Do we take active steps to ensure young people from marginalised groups know they can join Sea Scouting?
- Do we design our activities so that each young person experiences similar amount of challenge?

Opportunities
We encourage all Scout Groups and their families to support and participate in the annual Watersports Inclusion Games hosted by Irish Sailing, Canoeing Ireland, Rowing Ireland and a dozen other organisations passionate in getting people on the water.
If you’re not sure about how inclusion in watersports works, what the expectations of volunteers are or how to get more training, then this event is a great opportunity to dip your toe in the water of inclusion.
The Games is an award-winning event that will really help Scouters broaden their horizon and break down barriers to identify what can be done!
